Lebanon blocks Porn websites!

In case you are desperately refreshing your favorite adult entertainment site only to be faced with a “Page Cannot Be Displayed” error, hearing the following news might come to some as a big turn off. Literally.

In fact, Blog of the Boss has just learned that the Lebanese Minister of Telecoms gave the official order, based on court injunction, to block a list of 6 websites with sexual content listed in the “communiqué” below.

Lebanon blocks porn websites censorship freedom

Up until the time of writing of this blog post, it is still unclear which ISP applied this blocking rule and which did not.

Now disregarding the content of these sites and whether one approves or objects to it, this decision comes as a very alarming one due to the lack of clear justification behind this censorship decision as well as the choice of sites blocked. This implies that officials have the power to block or allow any site and affect the People’s freedom of choice without even going back to them.

Lebanon to block sex and porn sites

What is even more alarming is that this decision follows a recent similar blocking of Poker and Online Gambling websites thus drawing out a pattern and not a single separate act.

This topic usually splits any audience into two extremely contradicting partitions; those that defend freedoms which in their opinion should be left untouched, and those that think that freedom needs to be harnessed in order not to negatively affect society. However in all scenarios one would ask based on which standards and whose believes are the limits of freedom to be weighed?

To have a fair analysis, we all need to first acknowledge that this issue is not only arising in Lebanon. Big debates are being fought in numerous countries (UK ‘Porn Filters’ Block One Fifth Of All WebsitesIndia Blocking porn websites will also block good literature) between governments and freedom protection groups on what should or should not be banned; Child Pornography? Terrorism? General sexual content?

Despite this debate, attending conferences and listening to speakers tackling this subject, one would feel that governments are gradually acknowledging the uselessness of such decisions as people are able to find hundreds of free online tools such as the infamous Proxies allowing them to circumvent these filters.

In the absence of a healthy debate joining the Lebanese society with the governmental policy making officials and in a country plagued by immature religious influences strange to any modern day human rights awareness, we keep a skeptical eye at such decisions as what started as blocking gambling sites, already lead to filtering adult content then if we look further down this slippery slope we might end up filtering blogs, news, religion, comedy and maybe one day even Social Media…

UPDATE: This article by Lebanon Debate mentions child pornography as being a reason behind the filtering of these sites. We share with you the article while keeping a skeptical eye until an official explanation is provided.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but some of these sites seem to feature porn with minors? If that’s the case, child pornography is banned everywhere on Earth.

All of those sites ban child pornography. They are banned in Lebanon for unknown reasons.
