After Poker and Porn, Lebanon blocks CARFAX website?

Update: Blog Baladi reported that the same issue has been just confirmed in other countries (Ghana, Gulf). Seems this is leaning now towards the nationwide technical issue theory.

In a previous blog post we disclosed the Ministry of Telecoms’ communiqué blocking certain Porn websites in Lebanon and had expressed our concern that after Poker and Porn, Governmental filtering would turn into a slippery slope leading to the complete annihilation of our internet freedom.

This concern now seems to be justified with a possible yet unconfirmed new content filtering rule, this time targetting the automotive industry!

In fact, CARFAX, a US website which has become a worldwide reference to check any car’s history report and track record through a simple search of their database, is now inaccessible on most major ISP’S in Lebanon (OGERO, Sodetel, IDM, Alfa/Touch and some local network distributors have been confirmed).

How does this affect you?

Well everytime you need to buy a used imported car, you can no longer check the CARFAX report which reveals whether this vehicle has been through any accidents, transits or possibly worse suspicious life threatening events in its history.

Up until this point, Blog of the Boss has not been able to determine the source or reason of this issue and the blocking theory is not fully confirmed.

However we doubt that this would be a decision by CARFAX to prevent Lebanon from accessing its system, as such a huge portal would definitely use a more professional wording for their error page.

Block or nationwide technical problem? We remain highly skeptical while awaiting a clear explanation from the Ministry of Telecoms as this new issue, if confirmed to be related to filtering, is very alarming especially if it plays a benefitial role in support of some business entities in the automotive import sector in Lebanon.

If our concerns are confirmed, it implies once again that officials have the power to block any site and affect the People’s freedom of choice without any justification.

Solution? Through a simple Google search one can easily find many alternative sites (http://www.chilsonwilcox.com/autocheck.php?vin= enter your VIN at end of this link) or procedures (VPN, Proxy) to work their way around this issue.

Which brings us to the reason why most foreign countries have given up on web filtering as they are now convinced that we are a generation that cannot be blocked or contained; the internet may be “unknown territory” to traditional rulers, but for us it’s a playground. A bubble. A virtual haven, clean from their corruption.

They are welcome in anytime, as long as they keep their dirty shoes out.
